CASA CENOTE CAVERN LINE INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION OF CAVERN LINE IN CASA CENOTE January 19, 2020 There is now a Gold Kernmantle Cavern Line in Casa Cenote, as shown in the attached diagram. The line is continuous and starts from the boundary between open water and overhead, just before the right hand bend. It finishes just beyond the “crocodile rock”. Both ends are clearly marked with the slates shown in the picture and THE LINE SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR CAVERN DIVES – NOT DSDs. The CREER virtual line committee voted for this line plus an additional line on the crack passage side. The line team put a temporary guideline within the cavern line here to assess the route. Even the optimum route was assessed to be unsafe as it was very silty in places and extremely close to open water in others, risking Open Water Divers accidentally following it. The temporary line was therefore removed and a gold line not put in place. The team that put the line in was Jeff S. Clark (QRSS), Vincent Rouquette-cathala, Roger Williams and Lanny Vogel. DEC 2019 VOTE: CARWASH CAVERN LINE

THE VOTE: The route of the Cavern line at Carwash is controversial and it would be helpful if a wide cross section of the community put forward their views. The cenote owners have requested that some sort of cavern line remains, so “no line” is not an option. These are the 5 options that are currently being considered for the final vote later this month. REMEMBER THAT THE MAIN FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN PLACING PERMANENT LINES ARE CAVE SAFETY AND CONSERVATION OPTION 1 OPTION 2 OPTION 3 OPTION 4 OPTION 5 RESULTS: The community voted for: Option 1 – “Original” U-Shaped Cavern Line. Space to lay cave line under the cavern line at the red “X” markings – to left of sign and on far left of cavern. The Cavern Line at Carwash will be changed within the next week.

TAAK BE HA – NOV 29, 2019

TAAK BE HA CENOTE LINE CHANGE The line traditionally used for guided cenote tours in Taak Be Ha was changed from white line to gold kermantle line, in accordance with the guidelines for cenote tour lines from the September 2019 vote.  As lines are repaired, the standard of gold kermantle cenote/cavern tour lines and #24 braided white cave lines will be slowly implemented.  Thank you to Steve Bogaerts for the generous donation of kermantle line. The Taak Be Ha cenote line was slightly rerouted to pull it further away from the cave line on the right hand side of the loop. Additionally the cave line was pulled closer to the open water, to allow cave divers to connect directly to the cave line, without jumping from the gold cenote tour line. The cave line is white. Taak Be Ha remains open to both cave divers and guided cenote tours, and is an excellent access for cave divers to upstream Dos Ojos. An updated survey of the relevant lines will be posted in the near future.  For now, enjoy our lovely whiteboard drawing. GOLD LINE IN Vicente Fito with the gold line donated by Steve Bogaerts, which was placed in Taak Be Ha. WHITE LINE OUT Vicente Fito and volunteers, with the white line removed from the Taak Be Ha cenote tour.

DOS PALMAS DOWNSTREAM – NOV 29, 2019

LINE REPLACEMENT November 2019 — Members of the CREER Line Committee removed the gold kermantle line between Cenote Dos Palmas and Cenote Nicte Ha, replacing it with #24 braided white line, in accordance with the guidelines agreed on in the September 2019 vote.  The main cave line was kept in approximately the same location, with no significant routing changes. Red, damaged arrows were replaced with fresh white arrows reading “Dos Palmas Mainline” and two jump lines which were closer than 2 meters from the mainline were cut back to reduce the chance of divers making an accidental visual jump.  All arrow locations and directionality remain unchanged. The goldine removed from the cave will be stored by the line committee, for cavern line repairs and replacements. Cenote Dos Palmas remains open to cave divers, and is an excellent access point for downstream Dos Ojos dives.

DEC 2019 VOTE: CARWASH, CASA CENOTE, HIDDEN JUMPS

THE VOTE: The November-December 2019 vote includes the following questions about cavern line routing in Carwash and Casa Cenote, as well as the routing of hidden jumps in a few popular caves.  Voting was conducted from November 27, 2019 – December 4, 2019. 1. CARWASH CAVERN LINE The cenote owners have informed us that they wish a cavern line of some description to remain in Car Wash, so unfortunately the “no line” option is not available.  There are a lot of differing views on how the line should look (even amongst the moderators), so we will be proposing a vote in 2 stages.  The first will be whether the current line needs to change (requiring a two thirds majority).  If a change is democratically agreed to, we will put multiple proposals to the community and the line that is installed will be decided by simple majority.   The question that will be asked (via SurveyMonkey) is: What type of cavern line should be installed in Carwash? — The current “M” shaped line (no change). — A rerouted line that remains in the cavern zone, and is a compromise to facilitate both cavern tours and cave training. RESULT: CarWash Cavern Line. It was agreed to install a rerouted line that remains in the cavern zone, and is a compromise to facilitate both cavern tours and cave training. 2. CASA CENOTE CAVERN LINE Last month’s vote on the Casa Cenote cavern line returned a majority in favour of a line, but the vote was split on whether a continuous line was required. A line that goes through open water for a significant distance is not ideal for safety reasons, so the vote will consider 2 lines separately. The questions that will be asked (via SurveyMonkey) are: Should a Gold Kernmantle Cavern Line taking the route labelled “Section 1” on the attached image be installed in Casa Cenote? — Yes — No Should a Gold Kernmantle Cavern Line taking the route labelled “Section 2” on the attached image be installed in Casa Cenote? — Yes — No RESULT: Two permanent cavern lines to be installed, as shown on the maps that accompanied the vote. This work will be completed in early January, using gold kernmantle line recovered from Dos Palmas. 3. HIDDEN JUMPS The community has already voted in favour of marking all jumps, unless there is a compelling reason not to, such as cave conservation, preservation of a scientific project or ongoing exploration. The following jumps have been traditionally hidden for reasons of cave conservation, but they are generally well known. Divers looking for a “hidden” jump line can often cause more damage to the cave than if the jump was marked. If the decision is made to mark the jumps, the line will also be brought closer to the mainline (as already voted for) to minimise impact on the cave. The questions that will be asked (via SurveyMonkey) are: Should the Room of Tears jump in upstream Car Wash be marked with an arrow and moved closer to the main line? — Yes — No Should the Chinese Garden jump in Tajma Ha be marked with an arrow and moved closer to the main line? — Yes — No Should the Swiss Siphon jump in Muknal Remote (Jailhouse) be marked with an arrow and moved closer to the main line? — Yes — No RESULTS: Chinese Garden, Room of Tears, and Swiss Siphon did not gain sufficient votes, so the jumps will remain unmarked.

NOV 2019 VOTE: JUMP DISTANCE, TAK BI HA, CALAVERA, CASA CENOTE

THE VOTE: The November 2019 vote includes the following questions about line changing protocol for jump lines, as well as proposed changes to the Tak Bi Ha cenote line, the Cañones line in Calavera, and the Casa Cenote cavern zone. Voting was conducted from November 5, 2019 – Novemver 11, 2019. 1. Jump Distances and markers. For reasons of safety and conservation, we are proposing that jumps should be a minimum of 2 m and a maximum of 10 m from the mainline, and that they should be marked. Jumps that have a compelling reason to be hidden (such as for conservation or safety) and jumps that have traditionally been “hidden jumps” will be left as is, unless otherwise voted on by the community. Should jumps on Quintana Roo cave lines have a minimum distance between lines of 2m (6 ft), maximum of 10m (30ft)? — Yes — No Should all jumps be marked with an arrow, unless there is a compelling reason not to, such as cave conservation, preservation of a scientific project or ongoing exploration? — Yes — No 2. Canyons Line in Calavera. The Canyons line in Calavera will be replaced with #24 line as agreed in the previous vote. When the current thicker white line was put in, the jump was placed further in the cave at a distance of around 30m from the cavern line (longer than many jump spools) and the marker removed. A jump of approximately 10m would be longer than the original shorter jump, but not too long for most spools. Should the length of the jump be reduced to approximately 10m, and a marker placed on the cavern line? — Reduce the canyons jump to 10m and place an arrow on the Calavera cavern line. — Leave the jump in its current position. 3. Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line. Recent guiding incidents have drawn attention to some problems with the Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line. It will be replaced with gold line as agreed, but it also been suggested that we tidy up the route of the line and cut back the jumps to the cave so they are more than 2m (6ft) away from the cavern line. Should the Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line be re-routed slightly for safety and conservation? — Yes — No Should the jumps to the cave from the Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line be cut back to a distance of at least 2m (6ft)? — Yes — No 4. Casa Cenote Cavern Line. The current cavern line under the mangroves at Casa is a thin green line and is not continuous. Options for this line are to either install a longer gold kernmantle line, place separate lines in each small overhead section or remove the line completely. If a permanent line is placed, then a large line marker will be placed on the line with “CAVERN GUIDES ONLY”, to discourage open water divers and DSDs. What should be installed in the Cavern Tour area at Casa Cenote? — A single, continuous gold kernmantle line — Several sections of gold kernmantle line — No Line   THE RESULTS: The following decisions achieved a majority of greater than two-thirds of those voting, so will be implemented: 1. Jumps on Quintana Roo cave lines should have a minimum distance between lines of 2m(6 ft), maximum of 10m (30ft).  Jumps should be marked with an arrow, unless there is a compelling reason not to, such as cave conservation, preservation of a scientific project or ongoing exploration. VOTE BREAKDOWN 2. The Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line should be re-routed slightly for safety and conservation. The jumps to the cave from the Taak Bi Ha Cavern Line should be cut back to a distance of at least 2m (6ft) VOTE BREAKDOWN 3. The decision on reducing the canyons jump to 10m and placing an arrow on the Calavera cavern line was only supported by 63.8% of those who voted. This is less than the required two-thirds required to change a line, so the line will remain in its current position with no marker. VOTE BREAKDOWN 4. The Casa Cenote vote was split between those in favour of a continuous line and those in favour of several sections of line. The line committee will prepare some more detailed proposals with maps of where the cavern line could go, so the community can make an informed and democratic decision. VOTE BREAKDOWN Thank you to all who voted.

VOTE: TYPE OF LINE TO BE USED IN REPAIRS AND CHANGES

The first vote using the virtual line committee system is open from Sept 26- October 3, 2019.  The decision is an important one as it will put rules in place for what sort of line we use in future. To help people make an informed decision, we have prepared some samples with all the types of line under consideration. These will be placed in various dive shops and at dive sites, initially at Cenote Republic (Dos Ojos), ProTec Tulum, Under the Jungle, and Dive Rite in Playa. Given the importance of this for cave conservation and safety, the elected moderators have decided to make a recommendation on what line we think would be best. The recommendation is: Caverns where cavern tours take place – Gold Kernmantle Line High traffic caves and designated training caves – #24 Braided Line Other caves – Twisted or braided line – #18, #21 or #24 1.¿Que línea se debe instalar en cavernas?  What line should be installed in caverns where cavern tours take place? What line should be installed in high traffic caves and designated training caves?  #18 or #21 Twisted #30 Twisted #36 Twisted #24 Braided #30 Braided #36 Braided #48 Braided 3/16” Braided 1/8” Braided Gold Kernmantle 3.¿Qué línea se debe instalar en las otras cuevas? FIRST VOTE PLANNED & OTHER UPDATES

We are delighted to report that we have had our first meeting as moderators of the virtual line committee, and there have been some developments: The Facebook group has been set up so we can discuss line issues, and you will get an invite shortly.  This will be a secret group so we don’t have to expose the decision making process to students, guiding clients and others.  Upcoming votes will also be announced by e-mail. We have a website https://creer-mx.com. This will be the record of decisions made in our democratic votes and will also announce any line changes that have been made. The first vote will be on what type of line we want to use in the caves and caverns.  There is a bit of inconsistency at the moment, with some training caves having gold kernmantle line and some #24 white line. The thicker non flexible line in Car Wash, Maya Blue and Calavera caves has also caused some problems. This is an important issue, and we need to be well-informed before making a decision.  Kim has kindly prepared samples of all the lines that you will be asked to vote on, and these will be available to view in various dive shops.  These will be announced when we send the e-mail and announce the discussion on Facebook Finally, here is a reminder of how decisions and votes will take place: 1.      Moderators decide on an issue that needs addressing. 2.      E-mail sent to the wider community of cave instructors (Approximately 120 people, including Intro Cave), to inform them of the issue. 3.      Discussion takes place in the official Facebook Page, with a time limit of 7 days, and kept on track by the moderators: a.     All discussions are to be confined to specific issues of cave lines and conservation, with no commercial or irrelevant posts. b.     No personal abuse or ad hominem attacks. 4.     Moderators decide on the wording of the proposal to be voted on, informed by the Facebook discussion. 5.     SurveyMonkey poll sent to the voting community of instructors (approximately 94 people).  The criteria to vote is: Full Cave Instructor, Mexican citizen or legal resident, based in Quintana Roo for the majority of the year, active teaching status with a recognised agency. 6.     Eligible instructors have 7 days to vote.  Line changes require a 66% majority of those who vote. 7.     Landowners informed and line changes implemented, keeping the wider community informed via the official Facebook group and the “Guias” group. Thank you for your support. Kim, Alejandro, Natalie, Mike, Luis, Vicente and Lanny CREER Virtual Line Committee
